What is Automation Anyway?

We know that creating machines or computer programs to do things for us is automation, but what about other forms of problem solving?

At it's root, automation is building or setting something up such that you or someone else won't have to personally act later.

For example, I've had a couple of mobile phones ruined because of debris in the USB-C charging port. I've solved this problem recently by buying a simple USB Type C dust cap and moving over to wireless chargers (this Anker one for my work desk and this UGREEN one for my van.

Is this automation? I've set something up to save my future self effort, and to me at least, this is the point of automation.
